Rock Creek Summer Championships: Dive into Our 2nd Annual In-House Tournament!

1st Annual Rock Creek Summer Championships scoring for Poomsae (forms)

Hello Rock Creek Taekwondo Family!

Mark your calendars! On August 19th, we are thrilled to present the 2nd Annual Rock Creek Summer Championships. Fresh from the success of last year's tournament, this year promises more fun, challenge, and a prime opportunity for participants to boost their confidence in a supportive environment.

ROCK CREEK SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS:

OBSTACLE COURSE - For our youngest champs (4 to 6 years old): 9am

  • Format: A bracket-styled competition where participants go head-to-head.

  • Challenge: Navigate an obstacle course featuring tunnels, zig-zags, and jumps, concluding with a board break.

  • Winner's Criteria: Be the fastest to complete the obstacle and succeed in the board break.

BOARD BREAKING - A leap of precision for all ages: 10am

  • Format: The DISTANCE BOARD BREAK event tests skill and accuracy.

  • Challenge: Using a flying sidekick, participants choose their starting point and how far away the board to break is. The participant then must break the board using a flying sidekick at the jump's peak without crossing the line.

  • Winners Criteria: Break the board at the participant jump's peak without crossing the line with the farthest distance. Each participant will have 2 tries only.

POOMSAE (FORMS) - A classic for all ages: 11:30am

  • Format: "Everyone Competes" category. Each participant chooses one form, not limited by belt level.

  • Criteria: Participants will be evaluated based on two main criteria:

    • Accuracy - How closely the form aligns with the forms, basic movements, and details.

    • Presentation - The Speed, Power, Rythem, tempo, and expression of energy with which the form is executed

  • Winner's Criteria: After all participants in the bracket have performed, judges will tally their scores. The individual with the highest cumulative score will be crowned the winner for that bracket.

SPARRING - Open for all seasoned sparrers: 1am

  • Format: A bracket-style competition.

  • Match Structure: Best-of-three format, each round lasting a minute.

  • Scoring: Will be done by 3 judges on the edges of the arena. Points will be awarded for kicks to the body and head, or punches to the body. The head referee in the center of the arena will dictate Gonjams (penalty) awarding points to the other participants.

WHY PARTICIPATE?

While larger tournaments may have crowds of 500-1,000, the Rock Creek Summer Championships offers:

  • Confidence Boosting: This championship acts as a foundational step, helping participants brace themselves for larger tournaments. By gaining experience in a smaller setting, our students build crucial confidence essential for grand-scale events. Remember, to be eligible for the black belt test, students need to participate in at least three such large-scale events. Starting here helps in easing into that journey.

  • Emotion Regulation: Competing can evoke a whirlwind of emotions, from exhilaration to jitters. Our in-house tournament, surrounded by familiar and encouraging faces, provides an optimal environment to practice emotional control and poise.

  • Skill Showcase and Family Pride: This is not just a stage to display your skills; it's an opportunity to show your family — both immediate and extended — the fruits of your labor, dedication, and passion. It's the moment where you can proudly demonstrate what you've been tirelessly working on, making it a fun and memorable experience for both participants and their cheering squads.

  • Preparation for Bigger Stages: Consider this a vital dress rehearsal for more massive tournaments. Get a feel for the competition environment, the pressure, and the dynamics. When you transition to a larger arena, you're not merely participating — you're thriving and shining.

Join us at the Rock Creek Summer Championships for an experience that's not only about growth and learning but also about fun, pride, and cherished memories!
